The purpose of this study was to examine the understanding of colours among Form 2 students in art lessons. It was to find out responses of students in using water colours and the level of their knowledge pertaining to the concept of colours. Data collection was done using survey method. The sample consisted of 242 students and 3 daily secondary schools in the District of Manjung, Perak Darul Ridzuan. A sample random method was used. Questionnaires, observation form, semi-structured interview list and document analysis form were used as instruments for this study. The statistical method used was percentage and mean. The Crobanch-Alpha analysis factor test of reliability has also been used. The data collection from the observation form and interviews were compiled according to questions set in the questionnaires. Data from the document analysis showed results acquired by students after the observation session. The result showed that Form 2 students in the secondary schools gave a positive response to the water colour lessons. The study also concluded that the students were knowledgeable and understood the concepts of colours during art lessons. These knowledge and understanding were derived from the teachers, material references and collection of previous artworks. The study showed that students were average in colouring. Attitude of the students were the main cause for their lack of colouring well. Non-optional art teachers and the well equipped art room influence the students’ basic colouring skill. In conclusion, the study showed that the students are knowledgeable about colours but were less skillful in colouring.
