Abstract:
The primary school band is at the heart of instrumental learning in Australia, offering children the opportunity to perform from an early stage and providing a focus for their playing. This paper offers a critique of band teaching, drawing on data from observations and interviews in Sydney primary schools, including children's own suggestions for how rehearsals could be improved. Comparisons are made with the structure of music education in England, and an evaluation of the relative merits of the different approaches is offered.
