An Academic Exercise submitted in partial fulfillment of requirements for Bachelor of Arts (Hons)


This Academic Exercise has three aims. Firstly, it attempts to examine five underlying principles of performance art. They are (1) change, (2) innovation, (3) chance, (4) surprise and (5) simultaneity. To pinpoint these core characteristics, the performances and philosophies of key figures responsible for establishing the foundation of performance art are examined. Although performance art can be traced far back in time, this Academic Exercise, focuses its development only from Futurism onwards.

The second aim of this Academic Exercise is to investigate whether the essential features shortlisted above, can be applied through a series of Art lessons to a lower secondary class in a secondary school. An experiment was conducted in a secondary school in Pasir Ris, an eastern part of Singapore, to test out the above hypothesis. This is the school which I was posted to, by the Ministry of Education, to teach Art and English Language before I pursued my honours degree at National Institute of Education in July 2002. Hence, the second aim, in seeking to provide evidence that performance can be applied to a school setting, demonstrates how this application can be successfully achieved.

Finally, the third concern of this Academic Exercise, is to interpret the positive implications of the above application, to education. I seek to discuss that creating opportunities and the environment which allow students to perform, can be relevant to students' learning and benefit education and society in the long run.
