In this workshop, participants will learn about the design of the Fulbright Taiwan English Teaching Program, which uses a model of co-teaching and cultural exchange to incorporate native English speaker expertise into Taiwanese elementary school classrooms. Each year, 12 recent U.S. college graduates, under the auspices of the U.S. Fulbright Program, travel to Taiwan to serve as co-teachers in 1st-6th grade English classrooms. The co-teachers are involved in every aspect of their schools' English programs, including lesson planning, classroom teaching, and extracurricular cultural events. In turn, they are immersed in Taiwanese culture through their schools and living environment. Co-teachers work side by side with local English teachers, sharing cultural knowledge and collaborating on special Taiwanese and American cultural activities. The co-teaching relationships foster professional development as teachers exchange ideas about pedagogy and evaluation. The Fulbright Taiwan Program has increased student interest and participation in learning English and has promoted greater awareness and understanding of foreign cultures. Participants in this workshop will learn how the program is structured and organized, as well as its specific benefits for students, teachers, and the community. Participants will also develop practical skills for successful co-teaching and cultural education in English as a foreign language (EFL) programs.
