    My current research encompasses the development of a curriculum for the Creative Arts in Early Childhood in Malaysia. This includes the bringing together of research practices and methodologies while addressing the specific needs of Malaysia’s young children, the different cultures, and the requirements of Malaysian’s education teachers and administration. While the political climate calls for innovation for the goals of 2012, the natural musical, visual, kinesthetic and imaginative aptitudes of children need nurturing and developing as early as possible in order to meet and exceed these future ideals. Neurological and human developmental research have shown the importance of exposure and practical appropriate cultivation of abilities such as language, music in rhythm and pitch, as well as visual development to be especially vital in the process of dendrite and nerve mylenation. This program Creative Arts in Early Childhood encompasses Arts specialist, early childhood and preschool teacher training as well as partnering with parents and extended family are included to provide the highest quality of experiences for these growing children. The various and necessary aspects of these components are discussed in this presentation.


      “New” Traditional Children’s Songs for Pre-school in Malaysia DR MOHD HASSAN ABDULLAH, Associate Professor & Dean, Faculty of Music & Performing Arts Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Malaysia

      The flooding in of western musical culture into Malaysia has threatened the survival of Malaysian traditional music.  Children are more frequently taught traditional children songs of Western Europe and North America or Western-influenced new-composed songs than those of their own Malay tradition. Realizing that music is one of the important cultural heritages of the nation, there is an urgent need to engage in the collection of traditional songs among the elderly population of Malay, so as not to lose forever these important cultural treasures, so as to preserve and transmit for the future these traditional Malay children’s songs.  The collected songs are analyzed based on three main criteria; musical elements, textual analysis and functional analysis. In so doing, from this study, four types of product have been produced; new traditional-like music arrangement to accompany the songs, Music Manuscript of the songs, Audio CD, and VCD Karaoke with animation.  The products of this study should be disseminated through teacher education programs at the collegiate level as well as directly to preschool/primary-grade teachers.  The Curriculum Development Centre, Ministry of Education should also be advised on such findings in planning or revising future curriculum. By increasing the Malay traditional music repertoire, children can grow to a better understanding of their heritage.
